Yvonne Johnson ’64
Biography
For more than four decades, Yvonne Johnson ’64 has been at the forefront of advocacy and public service in Greensboro, dedicated to advancing social justice and uplifting marginalized communities. Johnson, who made history as Greensboro’s first Black mayor, has spent much of her career fighting for equity, racial justice, and economic opportunity. Her impact, both in public office and through her nonprofit work, has transformed the lives of countless individuals.
In 1982, Johnson founded One Step Further, Inc., a nonprofit focused on addressing critical community needs. Originally a small initiative, One Step Further has grown into a $2-million-a-year organization offering nine programs that provide services such as juvenile intervention, conflict resolution, and food security support in Guilford County. Under her leadership, the organization has helped thousands of residents access vital services, from diverting at-risk youth away from the criminal justice system to ensuring families have enough to eat.
Johnson’s passion for service has always extended beyond her nonprofit. As a member of Greensboro’s City Council and the first Black woman to serve as mayor, she championed issues such as affordable housing, education, and reducing violence in the community. Her career in public office was defined by a commitment to bringing about real change, particularly for Greensboro’s underserved populations. Her leadership has set a high standard for what it means to be a public servant dedicated to social equity.
One of the standout programs created under her leadership at One Step Further is the Food Reclamation Initiative. This program combats hunger by collecting surplus food from local grocery stores and restaurants, which is then redistributed to families facing food insecurity. In addition to addressing immediate food needs, the initiative highlights Johnson’s holistic approach to social problems—using community resources to provide sustainable solutions. This, along with juvenile intervention programs that offer support and alternatives to youth at risk of entering the criminal justice system, reflects Johnson’s belief in the power of community-driven solutions.
On May 1, 2024, Johnson announced that she would be stepping down from her role as executive director of One Step Further in June, passing the leadership torch to Andrena Coleman, a long-time volunteer and former chair of the nonprofit’s board. Johnson expressed confidence in Coleman’s ability to lead the organization into the future, while also pledging her continued support during the transition.
“The work that One Step does is important to so many lives,” Johnson said. “Although I’m taking a little rest, I will do everything in my power to ensure that it continues to succeed.”
As she steps back from day-to-day leadership, Johnson’s legacy as a tireless advocate for her community remains unmatched. Beyond her work at One Step Further, Johnson’s career in public service has made an indelible mark on Greensboro. Her advocacy for policies that promote equity, along with her leadership in addressing critical community issues, has not only improved lives but has also inspired generations of leaders.
Yvonne Johnson’s contributions to Greensboro, from the city council chambers to the boardroom of One Step Further, will continue to influence and shape the city for years to come. Johnson’s advocacy, leadership, and service have left a lasting
mark on Greensboro, impacting thousands of lives and
inspiring future leaders.
